Someone asked me this question recently, and it’s a good question! Because it seems like throwing a dart at a map, a bit random π My reasons for learning Korean (and Italian) are a bit for me, a bit for others.
For me: I love Korean dramas, movies, vlogs, and music. I want to be able to enjoy these without subtitles. And I love Italian rock music β€οΈ
For others: If I know Korean/Italian, I can communicate with others. I used to be an English/Spanish translator for a medical clinic, and being able to communicate with others is incredibly helpful and rewarding.
I remember back when I didn’t know English. It was overwhelming at first. When I found myself in a situation where I needed help, it could feel like drowning. And having a person who could speak Spanish felt like a breath of air. Really!
I highly encourage others to learn at least a few key words in another language. That first time you help someone in need, you will see how big of a difference you can make π
μλ ! Bye! Ciao!

Learning languages is so cool, and making cross connections is even cooler!
– I learnt Latin and French as a teen, Spanish as a young adult.
– Then when I came to Korea, I learnt a bit of Hanja (Chinese characters used alongside Korean).
Making cross connections between languages, finding root words and word origins makes the whole language learning game even more fun π€©

Absolutely! If you learn Latin, you have a fantastic foundation for learning quite a few other languages too. I wish I’d learned Latin in high school!
That’s really cool that you know so much!! Must be nice π

I totally agree with you! Every time I meet someone who has a different accent (I mean that in a good way, not judgmental or anything like that!) I ask them how to say some kind of greeting or salutation. It is a nice way to connect with others and shows them I am interested in learning about them!!! Thanks for sharing why you are learning Korean, this is so cool!!!!

Learning another language is amazing especially when it allows you to further enjoy a culture that you otherwise wouldnβt fully access. Good for you!
I wish I had more time as I would love to re-learn Mandarin one day!

Amazing! My son tried his hand at Japanese, so different and challenging! I minored in Spanish in college and have found it very useful. Study hard!

I agree with your thoughts . I love learning new languages. I only speak two fluently. When we travel the world in the pre-covid era, I made it a point to learn bits and pieces of other languages so I could speak to people and enjoy the interaction.
Thank you Jari.

I’m in the process of learning French, although I don’t know any French people. I’ve always wanted to learn it. When I was younger, I didn’t really learn it when I was junior high, aka middle school.
I want to go to France someday and if it is soon, when I finally speak to someone there, I hope that they will reply back to me “plus lentement ” (very slowly). π

I too am self-learning Chinese just for the sake of it. It’s been going well for the past year or so, and I can read basic stuff, and that really gives me the encouragement to go on. Wishing you the best on your own journey!

What was the language back then you spoke before English, was it Spanish?

Yes, Spanish from Puerto Rico, which can be slightly different than Mexican or Spaniard π Some words and phrases are different, and the pronunciation can be very slang.

Wow, thank you for sharing your experience. I know when I speak a language I am not familiar with I feel so frustrated because there is so much more to say but not enough vocabulary. π

Oh, I can definitely relate to that feeling!
