I’ve never read the Harry Potter books from beginning to end, but I’ve seen just enough of the books to have formed a strong opinion, and that is that Harry Potter is a cheater and something I can never get behind. Period.
For starters, there are many inconsistencies in the various Harry Potter translations. For instance, in the Italian version of the book, Harry is a bambino and not a ragazzo when living in the Dursley home– meaning, he is more of a baby than a boy. But the English version clearly has him as a boy in the Dursley household. BIG contradiction.
The issues with translation start from the title! I’ve done my research. Here, the Italian version says “Philosopher’s Stone,” while the English version says “Sorcerer’s Stone.” The error is clear as day:
It can’t be both.
Harry Potter has simply been translated too many times, making the books unreliable.
My biggest issue is that Harry Potter himself is clearly not a moral person. Here we see him making out with Hermione Granger, who already has a boyfriend! While naked!!
What makes this so terrible is that Hermione is dating this guy:
Even though I have never read the books, just seen parts of the books, I have clearly proven how and why Harry Potter is awful, and I rest my case.
Yes, I’m kidding π I would never review a book series by simply skimming through it. But, wait a minute, I have done that before…
I wanted to make a post reviewing Harry Potter in the same way that people often review the Bible. By skimming through it. And I’m sad to say that I used to be one of those people!
Without having read but a few bits of the Bible, I had formed a very strong (and negative) opinion of it. Why? I’m not sure, but even though it was silly of me to do, I was never questioned about why I had such a negative opinion on something I never read. None of my friends called me out on it.
I hope I didn’t shock too many Harry Potter fans π My aim was to give my Christian readers a fun example they can use when sharing the Word or partaking in apologetics. Or to at least have an example they can use when calling their friends out on it.
Because, honestly, somebody should have told me how dumb I was being! π

Ha! You had me going until the unexpected “twist.”
I started out as a new Christian back in the 1980s at an independent fundamental Baptist church where reading or viewing Harry Potter would have been viewed as sinful because of the sorcery. I’ve since learned that we can exercise our discernment while consuming non-Christian materials (like the Roman Catholic books I read for apologetics purposes and the movies by atheist and Marxist director, Elia Kazan, which I can plumb for spiritual lessons.
That said, I would rather watch paint dry than watch Harry Potter. I would even rather watch a…argh!…Star Wars movie.

Like you, I believe in discernment and maturity. I read non-Christian books and listen to non-worship music, but I’m almost 40… Hardly an impressionable child. It’s also good to read a variety of books, regardless of whether you “agree” with them or not, so kudos to you on that!

As a fan of the HP books, I had quite the laugh at the bait and switch. Itβs a series I look forward to reading with my T when heβs older.
The Bible is also on my list to read and learn more about one day. I definitely agree there are misconceptions people easily make about it.
