So Over Wokeness

I like to write nice posts, and I tried to think of a way to be nice with this post, but it just isn’t happening. So, instead of nice, I’ll be direct.

I am so over wokeness.

And I don’t mean the people with a solid moral compass, people who know that all forms of racism and prejudice are wrong, who know that lying, stealing, and other evils are wrong no matter what– Those people are great!

I mean, I’m so over the uber-woke crowd.

The ones that try to come up with new things to get offended by, just so that people can ooh and ahh at their superior virtues! Ugh.

These are people who usually don’t even know what they’re saying.

I’ve noticed that uber-woke people think that people from the Caribbean hate Columbus. “Don’t mention him in front of them!” they cry, as though we go into vapors at the mere mention of him.

did… did you just say…

I dunno, maybe Latin American kids who grew up in the United States think this way? But having grown in the Caribbean and gotten my education there, allow me to share the general experience: We learn about Columbus as something that happened, not an emotional event that sends us into fits.

We are not stupid: We understand that if it wasn’t Columbus, it would have been someone else. It was the Age of Discovery. Had Columbus missed us, some other country would have found us– and possibly done worse. It’s just something that happened. History is gory.

And we are not offended by the word “discovered” πŸ™„

Wokeness is Selfish

Honestly (and this is where I am not nice) I think people come up with increasingly ridiculous “woke-isms” to get the oohs and ahhs, the “I never thought of it that way!” and “You are so virtuous!”

It’s all about them, not the people they claim to be “protecting.”

(Also, how arrogant of them to think that the entirety of Latin America needs the help of the uber-woke who live in parts far outside the Latin world. Oh what will we ever do without them?! πŸ™„)

I just needed to express myself. I do like people with good, solid virtues, but man… the uber-woke are just out of this world. I have attracted a few in real life (because I look obviously foreign) and let me tell you, it was not pleasant!

And who knows? Maybe some people from the islands are offended by Columbus or whatever. We are not a monolith. But can’t the uber-woke people at least learn about our culture and history before trying to change it?

(Then maybe they wouldn’t be so surprised to learn that Cubans don’t generally love socialism…

…which should have been obvious.)

That’s my ✌️ cents. The super-woke rub me the wrong way. They speak for people. They don’t take the time to ask questions.

    • Thanks so much for the encouragement πŸ™‚ I felt that I had to speak up because although the government there failed me (that’s why I now live in the United States, a place I love) I do still love my culture. And it bugs me to see people have so many *opinions about my culture, but hardly any *knowledge of it. Thanks again!

  1. I am so out of it, that I’ve never heard of this term before. But I know the attitude you’re talking about…. it’s been around for a long time. And it’s proof that people of ALL walks, ALL political beliefs, ALL faiths, and ALL everything else we can use to define us… whether they’d ever want to admit it or not, tend to exert their beliefs on everyone else, including people they can’t possibly know about. “Wokeness” reminds me of a character from my comic strip named Odyssey, who was always feeling offended on behalf of others… and those people usually thought she was nuts!

  2. I have to agree with you on this. I am Liberal and progressive in my political leanings and beliefs. But I feel that we are living in a world of extremes – both extreme right and extreme left. There is no more room for common ground and civil discourse. I find either ends of the spectrum very dangerous and I think a lot of it fueled by online and social media channels and how it’s so susceptible to misinformation and people who can post and say whatever they want without accountability. Such is the world we live in.
